Assessment combines relevant strength testing with observation of difficult tasks. The therapist considers whether weakness, pain, movement restrictions or another factor is limiting the activity.
Strengthening Training at Home
Standing from a chair and controlling a step both require force, but they do not use the body in exactly the same way. Skilled strengthening connects an assessed weakness to a meaningful movement instead of giving every patient the same resistance routine.
Strengthening Training at Home: an individual home care plan
Standing from a chair and controlling a step both require force, but they do not use the body in exactly the same way. Skilled strengthening connects an assessed weakness to a meaningful movement instead of giving every patient the same resistance routine.
Functional strength assessment
Functional strengthening begins with identifying where force production is limiting a task. The therapist examines appropriate movements and considers pain, balance, restrictions and movement control alongside strength. A person may manage an exercise in isolation but still need help applying movement during a chair rise or a step.
Individual resistance choices
Resistance is a clinical choice, not an equipment checklist. A plan might use the body's position, a selected task or an appropriate band or weight. The method should fit the person's current condition and the home setup. The ability to complete a repetition does not by itself establish that the load, range or technique is suitable.
Movement-quality review
Between visits, the household needs clear instructions about the activities actually assigned. Family members should not increase resistance, add repetitions or force a movement because another routine seems more demanding. Reassessment considers how the selected work relates to the functional problem. Strength practice may sit alongside balance or mobility training, with each component serving a distinct purpose in the PT plan.

Eligibility and insurance review
Original Medicare Part A & B may cover eligible home health care when the applicable homebound, skilled-care, clinician-order and certification requirements are met and services follow an individual plan through a Medicare-certified agency. Coverage and any patient responsibility require verification. Blue Shield of California PPO and Anthem Blue Cross PPO benefits are also reviewed individually. Equipment, medications and separately billed services require their own benefit review.
To discuss strengthening training at home in Los Angeles County, contact HarvardCare Home Health with the current clinical instructions and the tasks that need support. Referring clinicians can use the patient referral page. Assessment, service availability and individual eligibility determine the next steps.
FAQs
Do you have questions?
Got questions about Strengthening Training at Home? Here are answers to what patients and families ask most.
No. Appropriate work may use body position, ordinary task practice or selected resistance. Equipment is chosen after assessment, not treated as a requirement for every home program.
The task shows how strength, balance and available support work together. The therapist can identify which aspects need skilled attention rather than assuming more repetitions are the answer.
The ability to complete a movement does not establish that the resistance is appropriate. Control, symptoms, precautions and compensation all matter when the therapist selects an activity.
Progression belongs to the individualized therapy plan. Ask the therapist before changing resistance or repetitions; a generic exercise chart cannot account for all clinical restrictions.
The therapist assesses current tolerance and the medical context before selecting activity. A previously familiar exercise level may no longer match the person's present abilities.
Follow the therapist's instructions about assistance, movement setup and changes to report. Caregivers should not add resistance or physically force a movement beyond the agreed plan.
Different tasks depend on different muscle groups and movement demands. Strength assessment is specific to the function being addressed rather than inferred from one unrelated test.
These may be complementary parts of PT when assessment supports both. The therapist explains which exercises address force production and which address control during a task.
Describe the functional difficulty, such as rising from a chair or managing a step, and relevant diagnoses. Skilled need and home health eligibility require an individual review.
