We assess it directly — count, rise, handrail side and condition, surface — and train on it as a primary goal rather than a final one. Where it is not yet safe, we say so plainly and work out the alternative, which sometimes means using the garage entry and sometimes means staying in for another week.

What the Evaluation Covers

Your therapist measures strength, joint range of motion, standing balance, and gait speed, then applies them to your house: the entry staircase, interior stairs, doorway widths in an older home, the bathroom transfer, and the grade of your street. Medications, blood pressure response to standing, and fall history are reviewed.

Working Within an Older Home

Where a change would meaningfully reduce risk, we suggest the least invasive version — a secondary removable handrail, better lighting at the tread edge, non-slip strips that come off cleanly — and we tell you which single change would do the most, rather than producing a list that gets ignored.
