In-Home Physical Therapy in Winnetka
Winnetka occupies the west valley between Roscoe and Victory, along the Winnetka, Corbin, and Mason Avenue corridors, across Sherman Way, Vanowen, and Saticoy, and through the residential blocks on Hart, Kittridge, and Cohasset. It is level postwar tract housing on wide streets. When we are called here after a fall, the cause is frequently something that has nothing to do with legs at all, and our licensed physical therapists check for it specifically.
Our therapists serve all Winnetka neighborhoods between Roscoe Boulevard and Victory Boulevard, the Winnetka Avenue, Corbin Avenue, and Mason Avenue corridors, Sherman Way, Vanowen Street, and Saticoy Street, and the Hart Street, Kittridge Street, and Cohasset Street blocks.
Bifocals and the Top of the Stairs
Progressive and bifocal lenses put the reading correction at the bottom of the lens. When you look down at a step ā which is exactly where you look when descending stairs or stepping off a curb ā you are looking through the part of the lens designed for a book twelve inches away. The step blurs, and depth perception goes with it, at the precise moment it matters most.
This accounts for a meaningful share of the falls we see in otherwise steady patients, and almost nobody has been told. The fix is usually behavioural rather than optical: on stairs, tip the head down rather than the eyes, so you look through the distance portion of the lens. For some patients a separate pair of single-vision distance glasses for walking is worth discussing with their optometrist. We also check when the prescription was last updated and whether cataract surgery has changed things, and report to your physician where vision looks like a contributing factor ā because no amount of leg strengthening compensates for not being able to see the step.
What the Evaluation Covers
Your therapist measures strength, joint range of motion, standing balance with and without vision, and gait speed, asks what glasses you wear and when, and measures the house: the entry and garage steps, stair edges and their visibility, lighting, doorway widths against your device, furniture and bed heights, and the bathroom. Medications, blood pressure response to standing, and fall history are reviewed.
Conditions We Treat at Home
- Falls with a vision or depth-perception component
- Balance deficits and fall prevention
- Recovery after knee, hip, and shoulder replacement or repair
- Gait retraining after stroke or with Parkinson’s disease
- Weakness and deconditioning after a hospital stay
- Back and joint pain limiting daily activity
- Graded walking programs on level suburban blocks
Making the Steps Visible
Alongside the lenses, we make the steps easier to see. Contrast at the edge of a stair ā a strip, a change of colour, a different material on the nosing ā does more for safety than most equipment, costs very little, and is reversible. Lighting placed so the tread is lit rather than the wall above it is the other half. Inside a valley tract house the usual culprits are the step down into the garage and the one from the patio, both typically unlit and both the same colour top and bottom. We name those specifically and put the recommendation in writing to your physician.
Coordination With Your Physicians
We coordinate with Kaiser Permanente Woodland Hills Medical Center, Northridge Hospital Medical Center, Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, UCLA West Valley Medical Center, Encino Hospital Medical Center, and Valley Presbyterian Hospital. Your physician receives objective measurements and progress notes after visits.

Starting Physical Therapy Services
Home physical therapy requires a physician order documenting medical necessity. Medicare may cover in-home physical therapy if you qualify, which generally requires a physician order, a skilled therapy need, and homebound status as Medicare defines it. Coverage is not guaranteed in advance. We accept Original Medicare Part A & B, Blue Shield of California PPO, and Anthem Blue Cross PPO.
Our intake team verifies your coverage and explains your benefits before services begin. Most patients start within one to two days of a completed referral.

Yes. Explain when it happens and the lighting or surfaces involved. The therapist can assess movement-related concerns and suggest discussing vision issues with the appropriate eye-care professional. A current prescription does not explain every difficulty with depth, glare, or step visibility.
