In-Home Physical Therapy in East Whittier

East Whittier runs from the Friendly Hills slopes down through the tracts along Colima Road, Santa Gertrudes Avenue, and Leffingwell Road to the Whittier Boulevard corridor, taking in Mar Vista Street, Scott Avenue, and Ocean View Avenue along the way. Much of it was built in the 1960s and 1970s on rolling ground, and that produced a housing type that dominates the area and complicates recovery more than people expect: the split-level. Our licensed physical therapists measure those half-flights first.

Our therapists serve all East Whittier neighborhoods from Friendly Hills to the Whittier Boulevard corridor, Colima Road, Santa Gertrudes Avenue, and Leffingwell Road, Mar Vista Street, Scott Avenue, and Ocean View Avenue, and the surrounding residential streets.

Three Steps, No Handrail

A split-level home does not have one staircase to be trained on — it has three or four short runs scattered through the house, connecting the entry to the living room, the living room to the bedrooms, the kitchen to the den. Almost none of them have a rail, because three steps never seemed to warrant one.

Clinically this is harder than a single full flight, not easier. A patient encounters these runs a dozen times a day, in the middle of doing something else, without the deliberate approach a proper staircase invites, and with nothing to hold. We train each run individually, establish which ones can be avoided by reorganising where things are kept, and identify where a short rail or a grab bar would do the most good. The recommendation goes to your physician in writing, and until it is in place the technique we teach assumes there is nothing to hold.

What the Evaluation Covers

Your therapist measures strength, joint range of motion, standing balance, and gait speed, then measures the house: each interior level change and its rise, the presence or absence of a rail, the entry steps, doorway widths against your device, furniture and bed heights, the bathroom, and the driveway grade. Medications, blood pressure response to standing, and fall history are reviewed.

Conditions We Treat at Home

  • Split-level and short-run step training
  • Recovery after knee, hip, and shoulder replacement or repair
  • Balance deficits and fall prevention
  • Gait retraining after stroke or with Parkinson’s disease
  • Weakness and deconditioning after a hospital stay
  • Back and joint pain limiting daily activity
  • Staged outdoor walking on sloped residential streets

Reorganising the House Beats Climbing It

Some of the most useful work we do here involves no exercise at all. If the bedroom is up a half-flight and the only full bathroom is down one, moving what gets used daily onto a single level removes more risk in an afternoon than weeks of stair practice would. We are specific about which moves are worth making and which are not, and we revisit the question as strength returns — the aim is not to avoid the steps permanently, it is to stop them being negotiated fifteen times a day while you are at your weakest.

Coordination With Your Physicians

We coordinate with Whittier Hospital Medical Center, Providence St. Jude Medical Center, Los Angeles Community Hospital at Norwalk, PIH Health Whittier Hospital, Sunny Hills Medical Center, and Kindred Hospital Brea. Your physician receives objective measurements and progress notes after visits.

Starting Physical Therapy Services

Home physical therapy requires a physician order documenting medical necessity. Medicare may cover in-home physical therapy if you qualify, which generally requires a physician order, a skilled therapy need, and homebound status as Medicare defines it. Coverage is not guaranteed in advance. We accept Original Medicare Part A & B, Blue Shield of California PPO, and Anthem Blue Cross PPO.

Our intake team verifies your coverage and explains your benefits before services begin. Most patients start within one to two days of a completed referral.

All neighborhoods from Friendly Hills to the Whittier Boulevard corridor — Colima Road, Santa Gertrudes Avenue, and Leffingwell Road, Mar Vista Street, Scott Avenue, and Ocean View Avenue, and the surrounding residential streets.

Usually yes, and more than a single staircase would. Three or four short runs scattered through the house get taken a dozen times a day, in the middle of doing something else, and almost none of them have a rail. We train each run individually.

Keeping essential daily activities on an accessible level may reduce difficult trips while you recover. The therapist can discuss that option alongside your abilities, available help, and the layout. Any temporary arrangement should still provide safe sleeping, toileting, and movement space, and can be reviewed as your needs change.

Yes — along with Providence St. Jude Medical Center, Los Angeles Community Hospital at Norwalk, Sunny Hills Medical Center, and Kindred Hospital Brea.

Repeated trips may place a greater demand on endurance than a single test. Tell the therapist how often the task occurs during a normal day. The plan can consider cumulative effort, rest, assistance, and ways to reduce unnecessary trips.
