In-Home Physical Therapy in Sherwood Forest
Sherwood Forest is a pocket of large lots and mature trees in the north valley ā the residential streets around Amestoy and Encino Avenues, the White Oak and Balboa Boulevard corridors, the homes along Chase and Parthenia, and the Nordhoff and Lindley blocks. Houses are set back on deep parcels with long approaches. A great many of our patients here are recovering from knee or hip surgery, and the thing that most often holds them up is not weakness. It is swelling, and our licensed physical therapists take it seriously as a limiter in its own right.

A Swollen Knee Cannot Bend, and a Knee That Cannot Bend Cannot Walk Properly
Swelling after surgery is not simply uncomfortable. Fluid inside a joint physically limits how far it can bend, and it inhibits the quadriceps directly ā the muscle switches off in the presence of a swollen knee, which is why a patient can be trying hard and still unable to straighten the leg. Everything downstream depends on it: without the bend you cannot climb a stair, and without the straightening you cannot stand securely on it.
So the swelling gets managed rather than tolerated. Elevation actually above the level of the heart, not a footstool, which is the most common misunderstanding we correct. Ankle pumps done frequently rather than occasionally, because the calf muscle is what moves fluid out of a leg. Cold used properly. Activity paced so that a good day does not produce a swollen evening, which is the pattern that sets people back a week. And attention to the pattern itself ā swelling that is worsening rather than settling, or that appears in one calf with pain and warmth, is something we stop and report to your physician rather than treat, because it can mean something that needs their decision urgently.
What the Evaluation Covers
Your therapist measures strength, joint range of motion, swelling and limb circumference, standing balance, and gait speed, then measures the property: the entry steps, the length and surface of the approach from the drive, doorway widths against your device, furniture and bed heights, where you can elevate the leg properly, and the bathroom. Medications, blood pressure response to standing, and fall history are reviewed.
Conditions We Treat at Home
- Recovery after knee, hip, and shoulder replacement or repair
- Swelling and range-of-motion limitation after surgery
- Balance deficits and fall prevention
- Gait retraining after stroke or with Parkinson’s disease
- Weakness and deconditioning after a hospital stay
- Back and joint pain limiting daily activity
- Graded walking programs on long private approaches
The Long Approach as a Training Surface
Deep lots mean the walk from the house to the street is a real distance ā often further than a patient can manage in the first fortnight, and therefore a genuine goal rather than a formality. It is also excellent training ground: paved, private, a known length, and never far from the door. We measure it, grade the distance against it, and record the figure each visit. Valley heat pushes the outdoor portion to early morning for much of the year, with a measured indoor circuit for the days when outside is not sensible, so the program continues rather than pausing.
Coordination With Your Physicians
We coordinate with Northridge Hospital Medical Center, Mission Community Hospital, Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Providence Cedars-Sinai Tarzana Medical Center, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, and Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center. For patients coming home after surgery we work directly with discharge planners. Your physician receives objective measurements and progress notes after visits.

Because fluid inside the joint physically limits how far it bends and switches the quadriceps off ā which is why you can be trying hard and still unable to straighten the leg. Everything else depends on that.
Ask what resting position and elevation are appropriate for your procedure, how to support the leg, and whether there are restrictions on knee position. Follow the surgical team's instructions and share them with the therapist. A footstool or pillow arrangement should not be assumed suitable without that guidance.
Contact your surgical team promptly about new or worsening swelling, especially if it comes with calf pain, warmth, redness, fever, or a change in your ability to bear weight. Chest pain or severe breathlessness requires emergency help. Do not treat a concerning change as routine exercise soreness.
It is usually ideal here ā paved, private, a known length, and never far from the door. The walk to the street is also a real goal in the first fortnight rather than a formality.
