In-Home Physical Therapy in Victor Heights
Victor Heights is a small hillside neighborhood above Chinatown and the civic center ā Figueroa Terrace, Boston Street, and Bunker Hill Avenue, Everett, College, and Alpine, the Sunset Boulevard and Beaudry Avenue corridors, and the streets along Amador and Solano. It is steep, tightly built, and threaded with public stairways that serve as the actual pedestrian routes between levels. Those stairways define what is and is not possible here, and our licensed physical therapists are honest with patients about them.
Our therapists serve all Victor Heights residential streets, Figueroa Terrace, Boston Street, and Bunker Hill Avenue, Everett Street, College Street, and Alpine Street, the Sunset Boulevard and Beaudry Avenue corridors, and Amador Street, Solano Avenue, and the surrounding blocks.
A Public Stairway Is Not a Rehabilitation Route
The civic stairways that connect these streets can run a hundred steps or more in a single flight, with a handrail on one side where there is one at all, no landing to rest on, and nowhere to sit if you misjudge it. For a resident in good health they are a shortcut. For a patient in the weeks after a hospital stay they are a trap, because the commitment is made at the top and there is no way to abandon it halfway.
We say that plainly rather than letting someone find out. In the early stages the stairways are simply not the route ā the vehicle route is, even when it is four times the distance, and we work out with the household exactly where a car can stop and how far that is from your door. Stair capacity is then built separately and deliberately: a few steps at a time on a flight we can supervise, measured, with a real number attached, so that you know how many you can manage rather than guessing at the top of a hundred.
What the Evaluation Covers
Your therapist measures strength, joint range of motion, standing balance, gait speed, and stair capacity, then measures the setting: the steps between the street and your door, the grade outside, the distance from your door to where a vehicle can stop, doorway widths against your device, furniture and bed heights, and the bathroom. Medications, blood pressure response to standing, and fall history are reviewed.
Conditions We Treat at Home
- Stair capacity building and hillside access training
- Recovery after knee, hip, and shoulder replacement or repair
- Balance deficits and fall prevention
- Gait retraining after stroke or with Parkinson’s disease
- Weakness and deconditioning after a hospital stay
- Back and joint pain limiting daily activity
- Caregiver training for the household, in Spanish or English
Small Houses, Tight Streets
Indoors the constraint is space: the houses are small and close together, rooms are compact, and bathrooms are often narrow enough that a standard transfer technique does not fit. We measure the rooms and teach transfers sized to them rather than to a textbook. Outside, the streets are narrow with parking on both sides, which means a car frequently cannot stop at your door ā so the transfer may happen in the traffic lane on a grade, and that is worth training as its own task: where the driver should position the car, which foot leads, and how long it currently takes you, so nobody feels rushed.
Coordination With Your Physicians
We coordinate with Barlow Respiratory Hospital, PIH Health Good Samaritan Hospital, California Hospital Medical Center, Adventist Health White Memorial, Los Angeles General Medical Center, and Keck Hospital of USC. Your physician receives objective measurements and progress notes after visits, including your measured stair capacity when access is the limiting factor.

Starting Physical Therapy Services
Home physical therapy requires a physician order documenting medical necessity. Medicare may cover in-home physical therapy if you qualify, which generally requires a physician order, a skilled therapy need, and homebound status as Medicare defines it. What you pay depends on your specific plan, and coverage is not guaranteed in advance. We accept Original Medicare Part A & B, Blue Shield of California PPO, and Anthem Blue Cross PPO.
Our intake team verifies your coverage and explains your benefits in Spanish or English before services begin.

Not in the early weeks. A flight of a hundred steps with a rail on one side and no landing is a route you commit to at the top with no way to abandon halfway ā which is a trap rather than a shortcut after a hospital stay.
The vehicle route, even when it is four times the distance. We work out with the household exactly where a car can stop and how far that is from your door, then train that route.
Stair capacity is built separately and deliberately ā a few steps at a time on a flight we can supervise, measured, so you know the number you can manage rather than guessing at the top of a hundred.
The therapist can assess whether stair practice is appropriate and select a setting with suitable steps, rails, and assistance. Public stairs may add crowds, irregular surfaces, or longer flights. Practice in a controlled setting can inform progression but does not establish that every public staircase is safe for you.
