In-Home Physical Therapy in Lawndale

Lawndale is a compact South Bay city of single-family blocks and apartment courts between Hawthorne Boulevard and Prairie, with Inglewood and Grevillea Avenues running through and Marine Avenue and Manhattan Beach Boulevard crossing it. Most of the housing went up in the 1950s, and it shares one feature almost universally: a single bathroom with a tub and shower combined. Our licensed physical therapists give that room more attention than any other in the house, because the numbers justify it.

Our therapists serve all Lawndale neighborhoods, single-family blocks and apartment courts alike, the Hawthorne Boulevard corridor and the civic center area, Inglewood Avenue, Prairie Avenue, and Grevillea Avenue, and Marine Avenue, Manhattan Beach Boulevard, and the surrounding streets.

Stepping Over a Tub Wall, Wet

A standard tub wall is fourteen to sixteen inches high. Getting over it requires standing on one leg, lifting the other above knee height, and placing it on a wet, slick, curved surface — then repeating it in reverse with no dry footing and usually nothing solid to hold, because a towel bar and a soap dish are not grab bars and will come off the wall under load.

Asked to design the least forgiving task in a house, you would design that. It is why the bathroom accounts for so many of the falls we see, and why we do not treat it as a small item at the end of the evaluation. Depending on your measurements, the answer may be a transfer technique using a bench so you never stand on one leg over the wall, a properly anchored grab bar in a specified location, a handheld shower head, or — for a period — washing at the sink while strength returns. We say which, explain why, and report it to your physician rather than leaving a recommendation hanging.

What the Evaluation Covers

Your therapist measures strength, joint range of motion, standing balance, and gait speed, then measures the bathroom in detail — tub wall height, floor space beside it, what is actually anchored to a stud — along with the entry steps, doorway widths against your device, furniture and bed heights, and the route from bed to bathroom at night. Medications, blood pressure response to standing, and fall history are reviewed.

Conditions We Treat at Home

  • Bathroom and tub transfer training
  • Recovery after knee, hip, and shoulder replacement or repair
  • Balance deficits and fall prevention
  • Gait retraining after stroke or with Parkinson’s disease
  • Weakness and deconditioning after a hospital stay
  • Back and joint pain limiting daily activity
  • Caregiver training for the household, in Spanish or English

Visits Timed to the Household

Shift work is common here, and the person who will be helping with a tub transfer needs to be shown it in person — a technique described on paper is not a technique anyone can perform. We schedule around shifts, including early mornings and evenings, so that training reaches the right person, and we have them do the transfer themselves before we leave rather than asking whether it made sense.

Coordination With Your Physicians

We coordinate with Kindred Hospital South Bay, Memorial Hospital of Gardena, Centinela Hospital Medical Center, Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance, Harbor-UCLA Medical Center, and MLK Community Hospital. Your physician receives objective measurements and progress notes after visits.

Starting Physical Therapy Services

Home physical therapy requires a physician order documenting medical necessity. Medicare may cover in-home physical therapy if you qualify, which generally requires a physician order, a skilled therapy need, and homebound status as Medicare defines it. What you pay depends on your specific plan, and coverage is not guaranteed in advance. We accept Original Medicare Part A & B, Blue Shield of California PPO, and Anthem Blue Cross PPO.

Our intake team verifies your coverage and explains your benefits before services begin, and we can contact your physician’s office directly to request the order.

FAQs

All neighborhoods, single-family blocks and apartment courts alike — the Hawthorne Boulevard corridor and civic center area, Inglewood, Prairie, and Grevillea Avenues, and Marine Avenue, Manhattan Beach Boulevard, and the surrounding streets.

Bathroom tasks combine changes in position, limited space, slippery surfaces, and sometimes stepping over a tub edge. The therapist can assess the specific movements you need and the support available. The plan should fit your abilities and bathroom rather than assume one transfer method suits everyone.

No. A towel bar and a soap dish are not grab bars and will come off the wall under load. If a grab bar is the answer we specify where it goes and that it must be anchored into a stud.

Tell the therapist before attempting the transfer independently. An assessment may identify suitable equipment, assistance, or a temporary alternative while your needs are addressed. Any bench or support must fit the bathroom and be appropriate for you; do not rely on an improvised transfer arrangement.

When bathing or toileting involves needs beyond the PT movement plan, an occupational therapy assessment may be useful. The disciplines can address related goals while clarifying each person's role. Ask your care team whether an additional referral is appropriate for your situation and coverage.
