In-Home Physical Therapy in North Hills

North Hills covers a broad stretch of the central valley, split into an eastern half of apartment blocks and denser streets and a western half of postwar single-family tracts, with the Sepulveda, Balboa, and Woodley corridors running north-south and Nordhoff, Parthenia, Roscoe, Plummer, Lassen, and Devonshire crossing them. Nearly every one of those tract houses has an attached garage, and in nearly every one the washing machine is in it. Our licensed physical therapists take that seriously, because it produces one of the most reliably dangerous routines in the house.

Our therapists serve the North Hills East and North Hills West neighborhoods, the Sepulveda Boulevard, Balboa Boulevard, and Woodley Avenue corridors, Nordhoff Street, Parthenia Street, and Roscoe Boulevard, and Plummer Street, Lassen Street, and Devonshire Street.

Laundry Day

The route to the washing machine is a door from the kitchen or hall, a step down of six or seven inches onto a concrete slab, and a walk past a car. The patient makes that trip carrying a full basket, which means both hands are occupied, the load is held out in front where it shifts the centre of gravity forward, and the basket blocks the view of the very step they are about to take. There is no rail. The floor is concrete.

It is a routine task, which is exactly why it is dangerous — nobody flags it, and the patient does not think to ask. We train it directly: a basket that gets pushed or slid rather than carried, splitting a load into halves, taking the step first and the basket second, or a rail at that door, which is one of the highest-value small changes available in a valley tract house. We also check the garage lighting, which is almost always a single fixture throwing shadow exactly where the step is.

What the Evaluation Covers

Your therapist measures strength, joint range of motion, standing balance, and gait speed, then measures the house: the garage step and door, lighting, the clearance beside a parked car, the entry steps, doorway widths against your device, furniture and bed heights, the bathroom, and the driveway. Medications, blood pressure response to standing, and fall history are reviewed.

Conditions We Treat at Home

  • Carrying, step-down, and household-task training
  • Recovery after knee, hip, and shoulder replacement or repair
  • Balance deficits and fall prevention
  • Gait retraining after stroke or with Parkinson’s disease
  • Weakness and deconditioning after a hospital stay
  • Back and joint pain limiting daily activity
  • Caregiver training for the household, in Spanish or English

Two Halves, Two Plans

The eastern apartment blocks and the western tracts need different programs. In an apartment the constraints are the corridor, the elevator or stair, and a compact unit; in a tract house they are the garage step, the driveway, and a long block with nowhere to sit. We assess whichever you have rather than applying one template, and we set the walking route accordingly — with a named turnaround and a planned rest, distance and gait speed recorded each visit, and the outdoor portion moved to early morning through the hot months with a measured indoor circuit for the days when outside is not sensible.

Coordination With Your Physicians

We coordinate with Mission Community Hospital, Providence Holy Cross Medical Center, Northridge Hospital Medical Center, Valley Presbyterian Hospital, Kaiser Permanente Panorama City Medical Center, and Pacifica Hospital of the Valley. Your physician receives objective measurements and progress notes after visits.

Starting Physical Therapy Services

Home physical therapy requires a physician order documenting medical necessity. Medicare may cover in-home physical therapy if you qualify, which generally requires a physician order, a skilled therapy need, and homebound status as Medicare defines it. What you pay depends on your specific plan, and coverage is not guaranteed in advance. We accept Original Medicare Part A & B, Blue Shield of California PPO, and Anthem Blue Cross PPO.

Our intake team verifies your coverage and explains your benefits in Spanish or English before services begin, and we can contact your physician’s office directly to request the order.

North Hills East and North Hills West, the Sepulveda, Balboa, and Woodley corridors, Nordhoff, Parthenia, and Roscoe, and Plummer, Lassen, and Devonshire Streets.

Because the washing machine is in the garage, down a six or seven inch step onto concrete, and you take it carrying a basket — both hands full, the load shifting your balance forward, and the basket blocking your view of the step.

The therapist can assess the load, route, steps, and support you need before recommending an approach. Options may include help with carrying, a different storage location, or suitable equipment. Do not assume pushing a basket or moving it one step at a time is safe for your particular balance or restrictions.

Yes. There the constraints are the corridor, the elevator or stair, and a compact unit rather than a garage step and a long block. We assess what you actually have rather than applying one template.

Tell the therapist what you need to carry and where. Carrying can change balance or prevent you from using the aid correctly, so the task needs assessment. The plan may include a different setup, suitable equipment, or help from another person rather than practicing the same task unsupported.
