In-Home Physical Therapy in Westwood Village

Westwood Village is dense and mostly vertical — the residential blocks and apartment buildings on Westwood Boulevard, Gayley, and Broxton, the Weyburn, Kinross, and Lindbrook streets, and the buildings along Le Conte and Hilgard near the campus. The residents are a mix of students and long-settled older people in condominiums, many of the latter retired from careers where being given a reason mattered. Our licensed physical therapists work that way as a matter of course.

Our therapists serve all Westwood Village residential blocks and apartment buildings, Westwood Boulevard, Gayley Avenue, and Broxton Avenue, Weyburn Avenue, Kinross Avenue, and Lindbrook Drive, and Le Conte Avenue and Hilgard Avenue near the campus.

You Are Entitled to the Reasoning

A patient handed a sheet of exercises with no explanation does them for about a week. A patient who understands which muscle is failing, why that particular movement loads it, and what the number at the end of the visit measures, tends to keep going — and, more usefully, notices when something is wrong.

So we explain. Gait speed is measured because it predicts a great deal about independence and because it responds to training. The sit-to-stand count is a proxy for the strength that gets you off a toilet unaided. Balance is tested with and without vision because the two tell you different things about why someone is unsteady. We say what we are measuring, what your figure is, what would represent progress, and what it would mean if it moved the other way. Patients who ask sharp questions get straight answers, including when the honest answer is that the evidence is mixed or that we do not know.

What the Evaluation Covers

Your therapist measures strength, joint range of motion, standing balance with and without vision, gait speed, and sit-to-stand capacity, then measures the building: the distance from your unit to the elevator, the stairwell as a backup, the lobby threshold and door force, doorway widths against your device, furniture and bed heights, and the bathroom. Medications, blood pressure response to standing, and fall history are reviewed.

Conditions We Treat at Home

  • Recovery after knee, hip, and shoulder replacement or repair
  • Balance deficits and fall prevention
  • Gait retraining after stroke or with Parkinson’s disease
  • Weakness and deconditioning after a hospital stay
  • Mobility training in compact apartment layouts
  • Back and joint pain limiting daily activity
  • Staged walking programs toward nearby destinations

Getting In, and Getting Out

Access is a practical matter in a neighborhood of secured buildings, valet-managed garages, and streets where parking is genuinely difficult. We confirm the access arrangement at intake so a visit is not spent in a lobby, and more importantly we measure your own route out — the corridor, the elevator, the lobby door and how heavy it is against your walking speed, and the distance to where a car can actually stop. Patients frequently find that last number is what limits them rather than anything about their legs, and it is a goal we can stage and measure like any other. The Village itself, level and close, then makes an unusually good destination.

Coordination With Your Physicians

We coordinate with the West Los Angeles Veterans Affairs Medical Center, California Rehabilitation Institute, Providence Saint John’s Health Center, UCLA Santa Monica Medical Center, Southern California Hospital at Culver City, and Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Your physician receives objective measurements and progress notes after visits.

Starting Physical Therapy Services

Home physical therapy requires a physician order documenting medical necessity. Medicare may cover in-home physical therapy if you qualify, which generally requires a physician order, a skilled therapy need, and homebound status as Medicare defines it. Coverage is not guaranteed in advance. We accept Original Medicare Part A & B, Blue Shield of California PPO, and Anthem Blue Cross PPO.

Our intake team verifies your coverage and explains your benefits before services begin. Most patients start within one to two days of a completed referral.
