Your therapist measures strength, joint range of motion, standing balance, and gait speed, then applies them to your setting: the exterior flight if you are in an apartment, the entry step, the unit threshold, the bathroom transfer, and the walk to the boulevard. Medications, blood pressure response to standing, and fall history are reviewed.

We have Japanese-speaking clinicians available, and written home programs are provided in the language the household uses. Households differ in customs we should know about rather than guess at — removing shoes at the entry, which room is appropriate for a visit, how directly a diagnosis is discussed within a family, and who should be present. We ask rather than assume, and we follow your lead.

One practical note: where shoes come off at the door, footwear for balance work needs planning, because barefoot or in socks on a hard floor is a genuinely different and less stable condition than the shoes a patient was assessed in. We work that out with you rather than making it a rule.

Walking to the Boulevard Again

Patients name the Sawtelle Boulevard restaurants and markets as their goal more than any exercise. It is a defined distance on level continuous sidewalk with places to stop, which makes it a good staged target. We progress toward it and tell you where you stand against the distance rather than promising a date.
