Parkinson's Care at Home: an individual home care plan

Parkinson's can affect movement and everyday activities in different ways. A coordinated home plan considers the individual's assessed mobility, personal-care and communication needs, with medication decisions remaining under the treating medical team's direction.

Movement and task assessment

Parkinson's-related home care starts with the person's current functional needs. Movement and daily activities can be affected in different ways, so PT and OT assess relevant tasks rather than apply a uniform exercise or cueing routine. The home layout and available assistance provide practical context.

Caregiver instruction

Communication concerns may warrant a separate speech-language assessment. Relevant guidance can be shared across the ordered rehabilitation team so instructions remain consistent. A formal named program such as LSVT LOUD requires its own confirmation of qualified staffing, suitability and actual availability. General Parkinson's support should not be presented as that protocol.

Communication-care coordination

The treating prescriber remains responsible for medication decisions. Families can describe how function varies during ordinary routines without independently changing medication timing or dose. Caregiver instruction should be task-specific and realistic about available help. Intermittent home health does not establish continuous supervision and does not promise to halt Parkinson's progression or achieve a particular functional outcome.

Eligibility and insurance review

Original Medicare Part A & B may cover eligible home health care when the applicable homebound, skilled-care, clinician-order and certification requirements are met and services follow an individual plan through a Medicare-certified agency. Coverage and any patient responsibility require verification. Blue Shield of California PPO and Anthem Blue Cross PPO benefits are also reviewed individually. Equipment, medications and separately billed services require their own benefit review.
