The therapist considers movement, coordination, sensation and symptoms rather than treating grip strength as a complete measure of function.

Everyday object handling

Item design and the environment may be relevant. A handle, container or utensil can change the activity, but an adaptation still needs to fit the individual. Exercises are selected from the clinical assessment; repetitive squeezing is not a universal hand program. After surgery, movement and loading instructions must be clear before practice is chosen.

Adaptive item review

The patient can help by identifying a few important activities and showing the objects involved. Caregivers can support the selected setup without increasing resistance or forcing movement. Fine motor therapy may provide a narrower focus on precise manipulation, while broader upper limb rehabilitation considers reach and positioning that contribute to hand use.

Eligibility and insurance review

Original Medicare Part A & B may cover eligible home health care when the applicable homebound, skilled-care, clinician-order and certification requirements are met and services follow an individual plan through a Medicare-certified agency. Coverage and any patient responsibility require verification. Blue Shield of California PPO and Anthem Blue Cross PPO benefits are also reviewed individually. Equipment, medications and separately billed services require their own benefit review.
