Bathing Training at Home: an individual home care plan

Bathing combines access, balance, reaching and a sequence of personal-care steps. OT bathing training considers the actual tub or shower and the patient's preferences before selecting an approach or equipment recommendation.

Bathing routine assessment

A bathing evaluation considers the complete routine, not just the tub edge. Entering the area, positioning, reaching supplies and completing personal care each have different demands. The therapist works with the patient's consent and privacy preferences, selecting appropriate components to assess rather than assuming that a complete bath is necessary during the visit.

Tub or shower access review

The bathing space and clinical instructions guide the plan. A chair must fit the shower and the patient; an arm or hip restriction can change the transfer and reaching method. Incision-related bathing directions remain under the treating team's guidance. OT can coordinate activity recommendations without independently changing those medical instructions.

Seated-task instruction

Caregivers need to understand which help is required and how it can be provided in the available space. Bathing training teaches an assessed routine; aide assistance, when included in the care plan, provides assigned help with it. A new device, changed restriction or different level of balance can require another review before the same routine is continued.

Eligibility and insurance review

Original Medicare Part A & B may cover eligible home health care when the applicable homebound, skilled-care, clinician-order and certification requirements are met and services follow an individual plan through a Medicare-certified agency. Coverage and any patient responsibility require verification. Blue Shield of California PPO and Anthem Blue Cross PPO benefits are also reviewed individually. Equipment, medications and separately billed services require their own benefit review.
