Then the difficulty is raised deliberately — feet together, then one foot in front of the other; eyes open, then with the head turning; on the floor, then on a cushion — with each step chosen so you can catch yourself.

The rest of the assessment is looking for causes rather than symptoms. Blood pressure that drops on standing, several medications that each add a little unsteadiness, reduced feeling in the feet, bifocal lenses that blur the step you are looking down at, and an unlit route to the bathroom at night are all common and all addressable — and we report what we find to your physician rather than treating balance as a purely physical problem.
